About Grade Calculations
This calculator offers several methods to help you track your progress and plan for success in your courses:
How Grade Calculations Work
Grades are typically calculated based on the weighted average of all your assessments:
- Current Grade Calculation: Enter all your completed assessments with their weights and grades to see your current standing in the course.
- Grade Planning: Our calculator helps you work backward from a target grade to determine what you need on remaining assessments. By entering your completed work and leaving future assessments blank, you can see exactly what grades you need to achieve your goals.
How to Use the Grade Calculator
Calculating Your Current Grade
- Import or create a course: Either import your courses from the GPA Calculator or create a new course.
- Set up your assessments: Enter all the assessments for your course (exams, assignments, quizzes, etc.) with their respective weights.
- Enter your grades: Input the grades you've received for all completed assessments.
- Calculate: Click the "Calculate" button to see your current grade in the course.
- Update GPA Calculator (optional): If you want to see how this grade affects your GPA, use the "Update Grade" button to send it to the GPA Calculator.
Finding What You Need on Remaining Assessments
- Set up your course: Import or create a course and enter all assessments with their weights.
- Enter completed work: Input grades for assessments you've already completed.
- Leave future assessments blank: For assessments you haven't completed yet, leave the grade field empty.
- Set your target grade: Enter the final grade you want to achieve in the course.
- Calculate: Click the "Calculate" button to see what average grade you need on the remaining assessments.
Using Points-Based Grading
- Enable points-based grading: Go to the Settings tab and enable "Use points-based grading."
- Enter maximum points: For each assessment, enter the maximum possible points.
- Enter earned points: For completed assessments, enter the points you earned.
- Calculate: The calculator will determine your current grade or what you need on remaining assessments based on points rather than percentages.
Special Scenarios
- Extra Credit: Enable the Extra Credit option in Settings to add an extra credit item to each course.
- Non-standard weighting: If your course weights don't add up to 100%, enable the "Override 100% weight requirement" option in Settings.
- Dropped assignments: For assignments that will be dropped, you can either exclude them or set their weight to 0.

Tips and Tricks for Using the Grade Calculator
- Calculate what you need on just the final: If you want to know what grade you need on just your final exam, create a course with only two assessments - one for your current grade (with its appropriate weight) and one for the final exam. For example, if your final is worth 40% of your grade and you have an 85% in the class so far, create an "Existing Grade" assessment with 60% weight and grade of 85, and a "Final Exam" assessment with 40% weight and no grade.
- Plan for multiple scenarios: Create multiple copies of the same course to plan for different scenarios - one optimistic, one realistic, and one pessimistic.
- Track your progress: As you receive grades throughout the semester, update your calculator to see how your final grade projection changes.
- Minimum passing grade: If you just want to pass a course, set your target grade to the minimum passing grade (usually 60%) to see what you need on remaining assessments.
- Export to GPA Calculator: Once you've calculated your expected final grades, export them to the GPA Calculator to see how they'll affect your overall GPA.
- Points-based courses: For courses that use points instead of percentages, enable the points-based grading option in Settings.
